The first-ever Where You Work Matters Lists independently ranks more than a thousand employers based on employee growth and performance.

Someone’s opportunities and success can vary greatly on where they work, regardless of their own talent or skill level. So, the Schultz Family Foundation and the Burning Glass Institute partnered with the Harvard Business School Project on Managing the Future of Work to create the Where You Work Matters List. The list is based on the trajectory of more than 12 million American workers and performance of nearly 55,000 occupations across 1,750 major U.S. employers.

Similar reports and “best employer” lists often rely on surveys and self-reports, but the Where You Work Matters List is the result of an independent assessment of employee growth and performance.

The list assesses companies against three categories: early-career jobs, growth jobs, and stability jobs. It makes these determinations by tracking how workers fared after joining a company, measuring changes in pay, mobility, and retention role-by-role. The list also gave platinum and gold recognition to companies with the strongest performance across their workforces.

“Where you work has a significant impact on your ability to build skills, increase your earnings, and advance your career. What this List does is make that visible. It gives business leaders a clearer understanding of how well their companies are developing talent and creating opportunity within their workforce,” said Eva Sage-Gavin, a former Senior Managing Director for Talent & Organization at Accenture and HR executive at Gap Inc., The Walt Disney Company, PepsiCo, and Sun Microsystems.

Of the 350 companies given platinum recognition overall, 22 also received platinum recognition across all three categories. Those companies are:

  • Docusign
  • Fidelity Investments
