The HR team at Texas Health Resources has transformed exponentially since the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing lessons from that tumultuous time into the present with a focus on work-life balance, well-being support, and inclusion. The organization uses the “Well-being Scorecard,” a science-backed tool from the American Heart Association, to identify what the company is already doing to support employee wellness and provide data on what can be improved.

The organization has made significant progress in gender and racial representation within the workforce, with women making up 79% of employees. This distribution is mirrored in leadership roles, where women hold 72% of positions. Additionally, 50% of the workforce is ethnically diverse.

The organization’s talent acquisition team works to build an engaged, skilled workforce through intentional recruitment, supporting efforts to hire veterans and create career pathways for existing healthcare workers. Since 2021, the company’s retention rate has risen from 81.7% to 86.3%, well above industry benchmarks.

Texas Health Resource’s core engagement is 82%, according to its most recent “Care Team Insight Survey,” with 92% of respondents saying they are proud to work at the company. One of the key ways the organization has achieved this success is through initiatives like “Vision 2026”—which began in 2016—to set the company on a path to a “culture of excellence,” holding itself accountable for top performance in key areas of success.

This 10-year initiative begins with two-way feedback, with employees encouraged to tell leadership what learning and development opportunities they need. Managers are accountable for checking in with their direct reports, listening, and encouraging engagement. “MyTalent,” the company’s performance management tool, recorded more than 1.4 million unique learning events for employees, contractors, providers, and students in 2023, up 13.9% from 2022.

Because of this, Texas Health Resources won the HRO Today Association’s North America Award for HR Team of the Year.
