Since joining MedVet in 2011, Megan Williams, the company’s director of total rewards, has utilized her knowledge of the veterinary profession to connect with the organization’s caregivers and design benefits that address their specific needs. Though she joined the company’s benefits and payroll team in 2018, she added compensation to her portfolio in 2022, expanding her responsibilities to provide compensation support for both clinical and support services employees.

Williams’ strategic approach to benefits design has allowed her to lead several successful initiatives that align with the well-being and professional challenges faced by MedVet’s caregivers. These include enhancing the company’s employee assistance program (EAP) and increasing utilization from 4% to 8% among employees, adding company-paid long-term disability coverage for all caregivers, launching a student debt program, and offering up to six weeks of paid parental leave.

“One of the most exciting challenges has been building an inclusive and comprehensive total rewards package designed to enhance the experience of our MedVet caregivers,” Williams says. “The majority of our caregivers are female. Therefore, offering programs like Carrot and Maven is important. We are also intentional in the provision of benefits that are important to our LGBTQIA+ caregivers. The thoughtful and balanced approach allows us to offer a profession-leading total rewards package.”

Each of these initiatives has been implemented without significant increases in the organization’s benefits budget, maintaining cost stability while enhancing offerings for employees.

Williams has also become certified in compassion fatigue and QPR (suicide prevention) training, and she has designed sessions on these critical topics to support and guide veterinary professionals both internally and externally.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the support and collaboration of my colleagues and the MedVet leadership team, who are deeply committed to delivering an exceptional caregiver experience,” she says. “As I look ahead, I’m eager to continue supporting our incredible caregivers and addressing the evolving needs each new year brings. Together, we can ensure MedVet remains an employer of choice where every team member feels valued and supported.”

Megan Williams won the HRO Today Association North America Award for HR Excellence in Healthcare.
