As chief learning officer of DC Health, Dr. Adaora Otiji, Ed.D., has implemented a series of initiatives focused on emphasizing the importance of trauma-informed leadership and robust employee recognition.

In particular, the “Trauma-Informed Servant Leadership Training Initiative” aims to equip employees with essential skills in empathy and ethical decision-making. Since its launch in April, more than 85% of agency staff have completed this training, improving their interpersonal relationships with other employees and enhancing their ability to serve the community effectively and navigate the complex nature of public health.

Additionally, Dr. Otiji spearheaded the “DC Health Recognition Program Learning Series,” which has engaged over 30% of staff members in discussions that celebrate employee achievements and promote knowledge-sharing across the agency. Held monthly, these sessions help facilitate meaningful conversations and allow employees to share best practices, learn from one another, and understand how their employee contributions impact DC Health’s strategic goals.

She has also played a major role in developing a multi-year workforce development strategic plan, which outlines a clear pathway for employee growth and development. The plan utilizes on-the-job experiences, collaborative learning, and structured training, and has led to measurable improvements in engagement and retention.

Dr. Adaora Otiji, Ed.D., chief learning officer at DC Health, has won the HRO Today Association North American Award for HR Leadership in Healthcare.
