Has there ever been a more challenging time to be in charge of a company’s workforce? From technology to global events, from mental health to productivity pressures, there are times when HR seems to be facing huge challenges from all directions.

In this issue we centre on three facets of HR’s world: technology, mental health, and the employee value proposition (EVP). In each case, the message isn’t about being more efficient but being more human. Whether technology in the business results in a “better” and “more friendly” workplace depends on how and why that technology has been introduced. The identification of “quiet cracking” indicates there is a need for a deeper understanding of the human experience. People will saddle up and soldier on even if they’re not feeling one hundred percent and HR needs to be aware of this. Finally, the EVP proves the relationship between the organisation and the individual isn’t a static give-and-take relationship, but one which requires good communication, understanding, and the ongoing determination to work together.

All these aspects require a more human appreciation of employees and of each other. They emphasise the human in human resources and remind us that work isn’t just about making a successful business; it’s about giving people a life that they appreciate and enjoy.

There can be few roles in business so rewarding, and there are few which are so challenging at this particular time.
