I have been waxing philosophical as I ponder the upcoming HRO Today Forum North America to be held at the MGM Resort in National Harbor, Md., from May 6th to 8th. Mostly, I have been thinking about people.

People are messy. People are complex, occasionally conflicted, fallible, and emotional. But managing people is the business of HR. And the practice of HR is evolving rapidly. Do you know who has the right answers about the ultimate future of HR? No one. We are all on the same roller coaster ride trying to see over the next rise because what follows may be a big stomach-churning turn. So everyone is trying to peer into the future because the only thing we are certain of is that the speed of this ride is accelerating.

Employer brand has become one of the most integral parts of an organization’s recruiting and candidate attraction strategies. It has the power to showcase to potential employees an authentic view of an organization’s culture, mission, and values. In fact, according to research from TalentNow, 84 percent of job seekers say the reputation of a company as an employer is important when making a decision about where to apply for a job. The hiring side agrees too: 80 percent of talent acquisition managers believe that employer branding has a significant impact on the ability to hire great talent, according to LinkedIn. And this is driving some organizations to think outside of the box when implementing their employer branding efforts.

CEO’s Letter: Protecting Our Own

On February 15, 2019, a terminated employee at the Henry Pratt Company in Aurora, Illinois, shot and killed the company’s HR manager, Clayton Parks, and an HR intern, Trevor Wehner, who had begun his internship that morning. A very tragic moment in a long line of tragic moments of unrestrained violence in a seemingly civilized world that has too many of these uncivilized incidents.

To be sure, there are numerous questions about why and how an illegally retained handgun was used. It is not the place of HRO Today to talk about the political issues of gun legislation, or in this case, existing firearms law enforcement. It is our place to ask: When HR is a target, how do we protect each other?

In the last few years, the HRO Today Forum events have covered a wide array of themes, including “The Talent Cloud” and “Driving Corporate Strategy,” to capture how HR has evolved. And while these advancements and responsibilities bring an abundance of new opportunities for HR, they also present challenges. This ultimately leaves HR executives and their teams to decide where to focus their energy and whether it will result in a positive outcome for their organization. So for 2019, “The Great HR Debate” seemed fitting for the HRO Today Forum North America in May.
