Employee Development During the Great Resignation:

Upskilling and Reskilling the Workforce

Employees are handing in their notices faster than their organizations can keep up with. This growing issue that could soon become an existential crisis for many employers, has been dubbed ‘The Great Resignation’. The results from research are pretty telling: employees feel less connected to their colleagues as a result of the pandemic, they’re feeling burned out, and are concerned about lack of training and growth opportunities. The ability to upskill and reskill are becoming increasingly important to workers, and employers that aren’t providing them with the skills they need to develop in their careers are paying the price.

In an environment where employees are increasingly becoming disengaged and disconnected, there is a strong positive impact that learning can have. If employees are considering leaving the company because they wish to change careers (one of the reasons frequently cited as contributing to the Great Resignation) L&D can step in and help prevent this talent from exiting the organization. At scale, internal upskilling and reskilling programs can help a company keep valuable employees by re-training them in disciplines they wish to pursue.

Onboarding is also more critical than ever. Beyond the interview process, the first impression new hires receive when they join a company is in the onboarding process, so L&D assumes the responsibility of creating and delivering meaningful experiences for employees as they join the organization. The ability to engage employees faster also helps those employees become more productive sooner and stay with the organization longer.

As employees leave en masse, so does a large amount of their intellectual capital. But it doesn’t have to be that way. L&D can be tasked with developing solutions and processes to stave off the outflow of knowledge capital when employees leave.

Organizations are now in a critically short window of opportunity where they can opt to either offer learning and development that actually works or watch talent and knowledge go elsewhere.

HRO Today’s 2022 Employee Learning & Development Summit will share strategies for L&D leaders looking to build programs that will inspire workers to stay with their respective organizations and acquire the skills that can advance their careers or allow them to transition into more satisfying roles.

  • Implementing LMS and other learning technologies
